Let’s update a 9 year old entertainment system

I was referred by an old friend and client, to a friend of his that had just moved back to the area. He had great gear… 9 years ago, but a lot changes in the world of technology in close to a decade!

His speakers were in great shape and his Plasma TV’s, although not 4K, are still working good, so I suggested that he keep these components and update the rest of the gear to today’s standards. We are going to install a HEOS network for him that will give his family access to high bitrate streaming audio throughout the home and a stunning theatre experience in his 2 video systems. Check back to see the finished project!

UHD is coming to your living room, are you ready?

Old Sony Flat CRTThose of us with a few years under our belts have seen quite a remarkable change in television. From 1926 until the early 1990’s televisions were heavy, clunky old cathode ray tubes, with the only real innovations being the transformation from black and white to colour pictures on the sets. The reason for the 70 year stagnation in technology? ANALOG. In the late 2000’s the change to digital television broadcasting was implemented and the genie was out of the bottle! Digital transmission allowed 100’s if not a 1,000 times more information to be sent through cables and over the airwaves. Television now would only be held back by fleeting limits of manufacturing technology. First came very basic digital images with only 480 lines of horizontal resolution, then very rapidly 720 lines, then 1080 lines, and hang on, here comes 2160 lines into your living room! In Japan they are testing television systems on the magnitude of four times this resolution!!

The CES (Consumer Electronics Show) on January 6th in Las Vegas will showcase the first fully compatible Ultra High Definition (UHD) television sets to hit the North American market. Sets available up this point did not encompass ALL of the requirements for UHD, they all would show the stated resolution but most could not meet the FULL requirements of the UHD standard that was only finalized in October 2015. These new sets will. Along with these new TVs there will be new UHD Bluray disc players from most of the major manufacturers. Netflix and YouTube are already streaming UHD content via the internet.Samsung UHD 4K

Recycling fees finally coming for New Brunswick

Every province in Canada has adopted a recycling surtax on consumer electronics except New Brunswick, but it looks like it’s coming. This tax is charged to the wholesaler/retailer and passed on to the end consumer. This surtax will cause an immediate increase of the price of televisions, stereo components, computers and a wide variety of consumer electronics including cell phones, PDA’s, printers etc. The implementation of this new legislation is a good idea environmentally,  providing that the infrastructure is in place to implement the effective recycling of these products in New Brunswick. I have yet to hear of any escalation of New Brunswick’s recycling facilities (either existing or new) to accommodate the implementation of proper electronics recycling. If you have any additional information regarding this please post a comment.

The draft legislation can be read here: http://www2.gnb.ca/content/dam/gnb/Departments/eco-bce/pdf/pr/2015/07/15-070Bil.pdf

How to improve the performance of your electronics.

I have always been a firm believer in power protection for electronics and yesterday the significance of really good protection made an obvious appearance in my own home theater setup. I grabbed the remote control to turn it on and nothing happened! I thought maybe a breaker had tripped on my electrical panel. I checked and all the breakers were ok. I next checked the Monster Cable surge protected power bar that I had installed 11 years ago. I had changed televisions twice and source equipment a number of times and plugged it all into this power bar. Well, it finally died, and, I’m glad it did!
I replaced the dead power bar with a new Panamax power center with surge protection and power line filtering and the results were astounding! The picture quality on my 55″ plasma set took on a new dimension of depth and clarity that I had not seen before! The picture was rock solid with absolutely no discernable noise in the image. My TV set is a V series Panasonic and I am now kicking myself for not seeing how good that it could be by simply improving my power protection!
Now, the deterioration of the old Monster Cable power bar may have happened over time (as they do wear out with age) but I never would have noticed the difference if the old power bar had not failed completely.
So, to make sure your system is working the way it was designed to give us a shout at Wired 1 Consulting you’ll be glad you did! I know I was!!

Controlling noise in your life.

I recently watched a TED talk about how noise can effect your health and how productivity in the workplace has decreased dramatically since the open concept office was introduced, primarily due to noise pollution. It also discussed how noise in the retail space can negatively affect sales and affect clients impression of the establishment, in a lot of cases leaving and never coming back, all because the sound in the place was bad! This bad sound can be the choice of music or the volume level that the business is playing for background music, but most times it is because the noise in the business makes it hard to talk or there is so much other noise in the establishment that you just can’t think straight!
Sound is very important to our mental health. The sound of birds singing, waves lapping on a beach and breezes through the trees relax us, while cacophonous sounds put us on edge, no one likes police sirens or heavy equipment backup warning beepers, they have a reason to exist, but you don’t want them when you are trying to relax or concentrate on something else!
At Wired 1 Consulting we specialize in controlling unwanted noise in both commercial and residential areas and the results of our work is truly astounding!
Busy establishments that you couldn’t have a normal speaking voice conversation were changed dramatically. Home theater systems that everybody had difficulty hearing the dialogue of a movie magically brought the actor into the room with you. No, it’s not magic, it’s sound control!
Have you had a bad sound experience in a Fredericton business? Let us know.

Terrestrial Television Broadcasting

This is a screen shot of terrestrial digital television, off a set of rabbit ears! In comparison with my digital television provider (Bell Aliant Fibreop) this off air image literally blew the image from Bell out of the water! The reason, data compression. In order to provide so many channels and services even through a delivery system as sophisticated as fiber optics the service provider has to digitally compress the image in order to get it all into the delivery pipe. When this squished signal gets to the TV it is uncompressed, but not without some unfortunate digital artifacts (mpeg noise, mosquito noise etc.). The same things happen to a digital audio signal that is compressed in order to be transmitted digitally over the home network. It still sounds good, but it pales in comparison with a direct connection to the speakers.
