LG shows 55″ OLED television at CES

LG and Samsung debuted large format OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) televisions at CES in Las Vegas this week. LG earning a “Best of Show” from CNET www.cnet.com in the television category.
What is significant about this is that although OLED is not new technology, it is the first time manufacturers have shown it in larger size televisions. Sony showed and marketed a 9″ OLED four years ago.
The significant thing about OLED is that the individual LED elements create their own illumination – no need for florescent or LED backlighting.
This dramatically reduces both the thickness of the set and the power consumption.
LG plans to have the set available 2nd quarter this year.
