Dramatic improvement!

Today I upgraded a home theater receiver for a long time client. He was sceptical when I told him that it would improve the picture quality and improve the overall performance of his system. The Denon receiver that was replaced was a decent unit, but quite limited compared to his new unit,  A Denon AVR-X1300W. The new receiver has 4K upconversion and the latest HDMI standards. He was flabbergasted when I turned on the new unit and turned on the Olympic Games broadcast – he couldn’t believe it was the same television (a Panasonic Viera Plasma 1080P)! Denon AVR-X1300W

Time to get Windows 10

OK, you have heard the screams of the uninformed, so-called “office expert”  claiming that Windows 10 is the worst thing since prohibition and it caused the earth to shift on its axis! OMG! Is is really that bad? Absolutely not! As a matter of fact, it is the fastest, and smallest operating system that Microsoft has ever made. It is also the most reliable and compliant version of Windows ever.

If you have a computer that is eligible for the Windows 10 update, do it,  and do it BEFORE July29th. If for some reason your circa 1975 dot matrix printer just won’t work,  you have 30 days to roll back to your previous version of Windows. If you don’t update before the 29th a new copy of Windows 10 will cost you $140 per machine. Microsoft is NOT going to extend this people, so just do it! It’s a fantastic deal on the best Windows ever!

If you need a hand with the update give us a call and we will try our best to fit you in!

Why is wire important?

Even with the explosion of wireless technology the best performance option for both audio and video in your entertainment system is with good old copper wiring. At Wired 1 Consulting we will not wire a home system with less than 14 gauge FT4 rated copper stranded speaker wire. The reason for this is simple; it sounds better. The length of the wire, the thickness and purity of the copper directly affects what your speaker sounds like!

Use the wire designed for the job!

Use the wire designed for the job!

In a lot of home systems these wires can be long runs, that will have both resistive loss, but more importantly, capacitive loss. Resistive loss can be battled by simply turning up the volume, but there’s nothing you can do about capacitive loss. Capacitive loss is the loss of low frequency content (bass, you like bass don’t you?) as a wire gets longer. The only thing you can do to help combat this loss is to use wires of good copper purity and of a decent thickness.  A very rough analogy is to think of boosting your car battery: if the cables used for the boost aren’t thick enough the car won’t start! The larger the wire the more current can be carried by the wire. Unfortunately I frequently see homes wired with cables that would be suitable for a door bell, but absolutely unsuitable for decent audio performance of an speaker. This wiring is usually done by trades that don’t know, and don’t care to know, anything about sound quality or the requirements needed to assure the best performance of your audio/video system! Their expertise is NOT low voltage electronics home wiring! The wiring in your home is there for the duration, so, do it right from the start and get your home system wired by a company whose business is quality home electronics wiring and design. It breaks my heart to see beautiful, very expensive, custom built homes wired with garbage wire! It reminds me of the days when houses were wired with aluminum wire, why? Because copper was a little more expensive…

Do you update your smart phone?

Do you have a Smart Phone? If you do, you probably take advantage of the upgrade policy that your carrier provides. It used to be three years but because of the increased performance and feature sets that new smart phones offer that time frame has been reduced to 2 years. These new smart phones offer improved performance and in some cases new apps or programs will only work on this new hardware.

The same thing is happening in home audio and video, not with the same frequency and speed as cellular phones, but things are changing! If you haven’t updated your home electronics there are some super improvements that are passing you by. Really cool things like the ability to connect to the internet to enjoy streaming audio and video content like YouTube, Netflix and Spotify. Improvements in picture and sound quality like Ultra High Definition upscaling and new multi channel audio like Dolby Atmos, Auro-3D and DTS:X.

If you don’t know what these developments are, but you want to know how you can take advantage of them, contact Wired 1 Consulting today for a free in home consultation. (506)470-7510

Organize your coffee table!

TV, Cable box, Blu-ray player, home theater receiver, maybe even throw in a VCR and an Apple TV for good measure. They ALL have remote control hand units and they are all sitting on your coffee table, or in the case of the VCR you haven’t used it for about 5 years and the batteries are probably corroded to the point of either not working or causing damage to the remote. Only YOU can operate this pile of technology! Most of the time it even takes YOU 10 minutes of fumbling to turn on the Blu-ray to watch that new movie release!

Why do you do what you do?

One of the most enjoyable aspects of my profession is the look of joy and amazement that my clients exhibit when they discover how good their new system looks and sounds.

Tell me he's not excited!

Tell me he’s not excited!

It really is no accident that this happens, as I have put considerable time and effort into the selection of the right equipment, installation and calibration of this new system. This system HAS to look and sound right for me to be happy! And I like to be happy!

My clients seem to always wonder how it is that I know so much about these electronic gadgets. Most importantly, it is experience. I have been designing audio video systems for years, so long in fact that I am designing systems for the sons and daughters of some of my clients! I am also up to date on industry trends and advancements in the industry. Sometimes what is “trendy” does not equate well with a system design or the longevity of the system.

Making the transition to 4K

I was contacted by a client in January that wanted to add Netflix and other web related content to her system in the living room. It required the addition of an Apple TV and HDMI cabling and the results turned out great. About a week later the client called me to say her DVD player in her BOSE system was showing a weird image. I went to the house and discovered that there was a problem with the BOSE system. I contacted BOSE and they said that the problem was such that it would have to be sent to them for service. I reconfigured the client’s system to use the TV sound instead of the BOSE and sent the BOSE unit off to Ontario to get repaired.

In the mean time, my client asked me about this “new” 4K television system. I advised that yes, it is a dramatic improvement in picture quality, and currently she would be able to get Ultra High Definition from Netflix and YouTube but cable wouldn’t be broadcasted in our area in 4K until the end of this year. I made some recommendations as to the type of 4K set. I got back to my office and the client called to ask me to order the recommended set.

The new 55″ Panasonic 4K TV arrived and the BOSE system returned from service and I returned to hook it all up. I was able to use the same wall mount as the old TV, with some minor adjustments, and the problem with the BOSE system was fixed by the service department at BOSE. I reprogrammed the system for the Harmony remote control and the results were OUTSTANDING!

The new thin line bezel and the increased size of the display worked perfectly with the table below the set. Another very satisfied Wired 1 Consulting client!

I have an older projector in my home theater!

Home theater is not a new phenomenon. I have been designing and installing them for more than 20 years. If you have an older projector in your theater, chances are that it doesn’t have HDMI connection ports and the cable that sends the signal to the projector is either a three wire component video cable or an S-video cable.

If your theater’s ceiling is suspended then it is fairly easy to install an appropriate length HDMI cable and upgrade the projector to one that has HDMI ports. If your ceiling is dry walled it may not be possible to change the cabling without a fairly invasive renovation, however, Wired 1 Consulting has a solution for you from Epson. 2 new models of home cinema projectors with wireless HDMI. A simple transmitter is installed at your source device(s) and the Epson projector does the rest! Epson Wireless Projector

The full line of Epson projectors, including the wireless models and the exciting new laser projectors are available from Wired 1 Consulting (506)470-7510
