Well we are finally off to Grand Manan in the very early morning to install the wiring for what is going to be a very “SMART” home. Grand Manan is a 30 some odd mile long island in the Bay of Fundy, an almost 2 hour ferry ride from the mainland. It’s a picturesque vacation spot in the summer but it’s mighty cold in the winter!
This is going to be a distributed 8 zone audio/video, security, surveillance, and heating system all controlled via 2 control panels remote controls and IPhone or IPad, It’s a lot of wiring and a ton of programming but it’s going to be a heck of a palace when it’s done! Pics to follow.

Another Great System On The Way!
This system is going to replace a BOSE 321 system in a clients media room. This new system will be anchored by a DENON AVR-1913 A/V receiver and the client’s existing 60 Sony LCD panel. They will finally have TRUE Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound thanks to the slim and elegant Definitive Technologies Mythos Solo Sound Array 42 all in one 5 channel speaker system and the Definitive Technologies Pro Sub 800 will deliver “rock solid” real bass response for the system. A Panasonic DMP-BDT320 Blu-ray player with built in Wi-Fi will give them killer video and things like Netflix access. The player is 3-D capable, so if they ever decide to change to a 3-D TV they will be all set. Control of the system will be with the Harmony 900 RF remote control.
We will keep you updated on the change over and the end results in a couple of days.

Out With The Old… In With The New!
When this client’s 60″ projection TV started to act up he wasted no time in giving us a call. We replaced his projo with a 70″ Sharp Aquos LED panel. Even I was impressed with the picture quality of this set. We used the old stand from the Sony, there was only so much he could get away with and still remain married! His wife, however loved the new set! Now he’s got to talk her into a new DENON receiver to replace the old silver Yamaha. He’s pretty insistent!

Trying to keep up with Tech?
Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am totally engrossed in technology. It’s an enormous challenge as the tech world never sleeps! New innovations happen every day and it’s a huge job to keep up with them all. One of the best sources that I use almost every day is on the web at www.twit.tv It’s a new media streaming audio and video web site that has very pertinent information for both the novice and the professional. Owned an operated by Leo LaPorte, a seasoned tech reviewer and enthusiast who has been in the business as long as I have, so he’s REALLY old (but extremely intelligent)! Check out the different shows available either on the web or podcasts from almost every streaming service out there. I think you’ll find something that peaks your interest!

Not quite telling the truth!
I just finished watching a television commercial (something I try to avoid like the plague). It was for the BOSE acoustimas audio system, that claims that you can get rich, immersive surround sound by connecting one cable (a toslink aka fiber optic cable). What a deception! Granted, you will get better sound than the flat panel TV speakers but you will not get rich, immersive surround sound! Here’s why. TV sets do not pass the digital surround sound information, in fact most source devices have to be set for stereo (NOT DIGITAL SURROUND) or no sound comes out of the TV…period. The only way to get digital surround sound is to connect the source device directly to the amplifier and bypass the television entirely, using the television solely for the picture. The problem when you do this is bad lip sync. That’s when the lips on the screen don’t match the sound coming out of the speakers. Better quality equipment handle the picture and sound together from the source equipment (cable/satellite box, DVD/BLURAY player) and pass the picture through to the television after applying digital processing that eliminates any lip sync problem.
At Wired1 Consulting we’ll make sure that you are always in sync!

The Consumer Electronics Show
The insanity starts tomorrow (Jan 08) in Las Vegas. The 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will see a focus on the new 4K high definition television screens and connectivity. One of the newest connection/communication developments is NFC (near field communication). My new Windows Phone 8 has this technology built in. All you have to do is physically tap another NFC enabled device and they connect wirelessly with each other! How cool is that? I can give someone a picture, movie file, song, contact information simply by tapping their smart device. When the two units move far enough away from each other the connection is terminated.

The importance of television noise reduction
You may be thinking to yourself that because our television broadcast systems are “digital” that the signal quality shouldn’t need any filtering to remove noise from the picture however…
The TV channels transmitted by satellite, cable and over the air are digitally encoded and compressed in order to get as many channels as they can out to their subscribers. This is called MPEG encoding. The original signal is compressed for transmission and then expanded when it is delivered to your TV. This is not a loss less system. In the compression process a small amount of information is lost, never to be seen on your TV! When your digital TV plays these signals it attempts to fill in the missing pieces of the picture puzzle. How well this is done depends a lot on the quality of the television, but even the best need a little help. Check out the picture controls on your TV and you will probably find a control or two dealing with things like mpeg noise reduction, mosquito noise reduction, block noise reduction etc. Experiment with these controls, they are there because the television manufacturers realize that the mpeg television broadcast system usually needs a little help!
If you are watching a Blu-ray disc on your TV you can usually turn off these filters as the information on the disc is uncompressed.
Enjoy!

Important note to those buying the on-line upgrade to Windows 8!
Windows 8 is a great new operating sytem and with it Microsoft finally seems to be on the fast track again. With the introduction of Windows Phone 8, the new Surface RT and a plethora of new and exciting Windows 8 computer offerings from almost every manufacturer there is finally something solid for the PC user, both personal and professional.
Beware! If you purchase the online Windows 8 Pro upgrade from Microsoft pay VERY close attention to the the recommendations section of the analyzer. There is a radio link to SHOW these recommendations. Make sure that you read these recommendations, as they may make it impossible to use Windows 8 with your current computer hardware. Time marches on, and even if your computer has been running Windows 7 it does not nessesarily mean that it can run Windows 8! This is a problem in that it is very easy for the novice user to skip over these recommendations (you have to click on a radio link to view them) and if you do skip them there is no further warning. The site simply takes you to the purchase screen to buy your copy of Windows 8 Pro, which, if you had read the recommendations, you would know that Windows 8 is NOT going to work on your machine and it may not tell you this until you have gone through an attempted full installation only to find that Windows 8 will not work and your Windows will be returned to it’s pre-update condition. Now this is a waste of time both in the install process and the time that you will have to spend on-line or on the phone trying to get your money back from Microsoft!
These warnings should be BOLD and unavoidable in a properly designed diagnostic tool from someone as advanced as Microsoft, but they aren’t. Pay close attention to the diagnostic program that runs BEFORE you drop $40 on the upgrade!
That being said, Windows 8 is a tremendous operating system (on a computer that has the right hardware) and even if you don’t have touch screen using a mouse and keyboard are just great! It’s exciting stuff from Redmond! I just wish they had taken a bit more time with the diagnostic analyzer.
