Bandwidth and the problem with wireless data transmission in the home

A new client had had his home renovated with new floors, countertops and cabinets. In one room of his home he had his surround sound home theater. The problem that arose, and that prompted him to contact us, was that the flooring contractor had neglected to run one of his rear channel speaker wires for his system! New ceilings had been installed in the floor below the system so there was no way to get a new wire across the floor without making a large mess. Our solution for him was to install a wireless transmitter that sends the rear channels from the receiver to an amplified receiver that we hid behind his couch and atta ched the rear speakers to it.

This worked great, however, the client also uses an Apple TV for his streaming media (Netflix etc.) that is using a Wi Fi (wireless connection) and when he tried to use it his picture froze on the TV. He contacted us quite distressed that his family couldn’t watch Netflix! The problem was his wireless router! He was using a 10 year old internet wireless router that had been supplied by his internet provider. He replaced the router with a new, up to date model and – per our recommendation – the problem disapeared and everything worked properly!

The problem is bandwidth – even though these wireless systems work through the airwaves there is a limitation to how much information can be transmitted through the home without starting to interfere with each other. The best solution to all this is to have direct wiring for your equipment, but if you have to “go wireless”, make sure that you have up to date transmitters and routers to hopefully enjoy trouble free signals in your home.

The importance of the network

How often do you update your computer? Hopefully you update on at least a monthly basis. Some computer programs even post messages telling you that an update is available. These updates allow your computer to function properly with the ongoing changes in the digital domain. Without these updates your computer system will eventually stop operating the way it should.
Consumer electronics are no different. Most of them are in fact controlled by an internal computer. It is now important to check on a regular basis to see if an update is needed. With most of today’s devices there is a connection port to the internet or a wireless internet modem built in to the unit. TVs, blu-ray players, game consoles, audio video receivers, satellite receivers and cable boxes all require updates. Some will update automatically (satellite and cable boxes) with the rest you have to check periodically to see if there is an update available and this requires a connection to home network and to the internet.
I have many clients that complained that a lot of discs were not playing on their blu- ray player. A simple update via the web and voila!, those discs started playing again. There is also a great deal of content available to these devices from the internet like Netflix, YouTube, Facebook etc. that require a constant connection to the World Wide Web.
At Wired 1 we are solution providers first and foremost. If you have a problem, we can solve it. If you have a question we have the answers!

What makes a good amplifier?

An amplifier, or receiver(an amplifier with a radio tuner) ideally should not affect the sound quality at all, it should just make the sound louder. This is unfortunately theoretically impossible but it is the ideal that amplifier designers and engineers have been striving for ever since the first recorded audio. The reason that this pot of gold at the end of the rainbow will never be found is a nasty thing called distortion. The electronic devices that are used to increase the volume have distortion and the cheaper the device the more distortion they are going to create. There are two ways that a designer can combat these distortions. You can continue to use inexpensive components in the amplifier and employ another small amplifier called a negative feedback amplifier that injects a reverse wave of the distortion element into the signal and the 2 waves cancel each other out. This would work great if we all didn’t have to deal with a little constant called time. Even though we are dealing with the speed of electricity in wires there is still a time shift that happens when negative feedback is used and the distortions (inter modulation distortion) that this creates is much more annoying to our ears than the original distortion that it was designed to lessen.

The best way to combat distortion is to use the best quality components in the design of your amplifier. A small amount of harmonic distortion can be tolerated a lot easier by the human ear than the same amount of intermodulation distortion. Tube electronics generate a very natural distortion called even order harmonic distortion. This is actually a distortion that the human ear perceives as tolerable, this type of distortion occurs naturally in our every day lives, from a dog barking to a barbershop quartet, they all contain even order harmonics to create the sound we hear. Transistors on the other hand create odd order harmonics. These harmonics do not occur naturally and so our ears are much more intolerant to these sounds. Although distortion can’t be eliminated transistors can be tested and manufactured to a very close tolerance to lessen the percentage of distortion that they contain. Integrated circuits (the kind of device found in almost all inexpensive audio systems (from an ipod to a home theater in a box) can not be controlled by manufacturers tolerances and as such have to use a lot of negative feedback to negate the whopping amounts of distortion that they create. But, they are CHEAP! So, to the uneducated consumer these devices look like the deal of the century! Wow, a thousand watts of power for $299! Smoke and mirrors people! Any specification can be fudged to make it seem to the consumer that the laws of inflation and economics does not apply to the consumer electronics industry! How much did that Volkswagen Golf cost 15 years ago versus today… you get my drift.

Now, there have been a lot of developments in manufacturing that have reduced the costs of making an amplifier today. Things like computer controlled design and manufacturing (CADCAM) have vastly reduced the assembly line costs of all companies and this has also helped the fit and finish of these products but not to the degree that some of the manufacturers are asking you to believe!

So, in a nutshell, when you are looking for a good sounding surround sound system get one with discrete transistors and you will be well on your way to a longer lasting and better sounding system or give us a shout and we will make sure you do!

Happy listening!

Wondering which TV to buy?

We know it’s a confusing electronic marketplace out there. Different technologies, more screen sizes , lots of different manufacturers and price tags and all sorts of mounting options. Things got a little more confusing this week with the announcement by LG at the CEDIA showcase in Indianapolis that they will be coming to market with 4K televisions! What’s 4K you ask? Well, it’s the next generation of high definition displays. It, in effect, doubles the resolution of current 1080P high definition TV’s (1920 X 1080) to a whopping 3840 X 2160 pixels and is being termed UHDTV (Ultra High Definition TV). Fasten your seat belts, as this is just the second step in the evolution of digital high definition that will be coming over the next several years. The Hobbit was filmed with 8K cameras, and NHK in Japan is currently filming with 16K cameras! 16 times the resolution of todays high definition TV!!

What does this mean to you: As the image detail increases in the displays the source or playback delivery devices also have to keep pace. Currently only You Tube has the ability to stream 4K content, but currently the web can’t keep up with live streaming rates of 4K so you will have to download and watch later, and if you don’t have a T3 or fiber optic connection to the internet it will be a LOT later! Blu-ray players will be using a format called Ultra Violet that will allow most Blu-ray players to playback 4K videos, but the increase in resolution will require that the movie will come on 2 or more sides of a disc! Other delivery systems such as cable and satellite are still trying to figure out how they are going to deliver this content to consumers and still provide content selection. A single 4K channel takes up the space of 2 high definition channels.

This means that we will probably see some more downward pricing on 1080P televisions as the new 4K sets come to market! 1080P is still a tremendous picture but in the digital electronics industry the technology doesn’t stand still! This is a hard pill to swallow for most consumers that still remember that the original analog television broadcast system took almost 60 years to change! It’s digital now, and the way it’s looking there is no end to the evolution!

At Wired 1 we can help you with your decision based on your preferences, room size and adoption patterns! Our home wiring systems will always keep you a couple of steps ahead of the coming technologies.

When does wireless audio make sense?

If possible, a wired connection directly to your speakers is always the preferred and the better sounding option, but there are situations when wireless (network) audio systems are the only viable way to get sound distributed in your home.
At Wired 1 we are experts in getting wires through floors and walls but sometimes we just can’t find a way so we reluctantly use wireless systems.

There are many drawbacks to wireless systems however. Most of them rely on digital storage of media. Although it is possible to store your audio media in an uncompressed format (flac, monkey audio, lossless aac etc.) most of the audio is out there in MP3 or AAC format. These are lossy compression codecs that sound OK, unless, you compare them to the original piece of music! They also rely on the integrity of your wireless computer network. In most houses there are multiple devices (cordless phones, cellular, baby monitors etc..) that compete or interfere with the wireless network. The technology for wireless data transmission is far from developed and in the next couple of years you are going to see the speed of the home wireless network increase exponentially. Most of these available wireless audio systems use wireless N transmission, with no way to update to the next wireless transmission standard without physically replacing all of the existing hardware.

You also need a BOX in every room that has to be plugged into the wall. The amplifiers and speakers that are built into these boxes are portable audio quality – definitely not anywhere approaching audiophile quality.

With a wired audio distribution system you can use esoteric audio components that are centrally located, no boxes in the room, if you wish  the speaker systems can be either inserted flush in walls or in ceilings the options are endless – nothing to collect dust, no wires to trip over, nothing for the kids to knock over, dog to chew or cat to claw! But MOST importantly they sound BETTER and can be updated simply by changing your source device.

I can foresee a day when wireless audio & video will be fast enough and reliable enough to become a serious competitor to a wired system but that time is not soon coming! I will let you know when that day arrives!

Size is no longer a factor!

With the new flat panel televisions and high definition sources the recommended size of televisions have gone up dramatically!

In the bedroom, 26-32″ was the usual bedroom television size 5 or 6 years ago. With the new super slim sets that average size has gone up dramatically. We recently replaced a 46″ with a 70″ in a clients bedroom. Let me tell you, there is no problem seeing the puck now! The new TV is shallower than the old TV by about 4″ when mounted on the wall so you pick up a little viewing distance.

Who says size doesn't matter?!

Do you have speakers in the walls or ceilings of your home?

If those speakers were installed 8 or more years ago they may be suffering from a disease we in the industry call speaker “rot”. The changes in moisture and heat levels in the home can be extremely hard on architectural speakers. Even quality brand name speakers produced back then start to fall apart when exposed to the home environment and time

We recently did a theatre re-design for a client and when we removed the in-wall rear speakers the foam rubber surrounds of the woofers (bass speaker) had almost disintegrated! These were 13 year old speakers from ENERGY, a very reputable manufacturer of boxed loudspeakers, but not one known for their in wall speakers. ENERGY was not the only manufacturer using the same construction methods for their architectural speakers, they were one of the “better” ones built in the 80’s and 90’s, some were built to a lot lower standard than the ENERGY’s.

The good news is that these speakers can be replaced very easily with speakers designed for the in-wall, in ceiling conditions in the home. SpeakerCraft is one of the few companies that offer a LIFETIME warranty on their speakers. How can they do this? Easy, SpeakerCraft is an architectural loudspeaker manufacturer. They don’t do it as a sideline, they are the worlds best in-wall, in-ceiling speaker manufacturer on the planet and the speakers are made to last a lifetime.

So tomorrow get out the step stool and take one of the grills off your speakers and when you see the shape they are in give us a call!
