Yup, there is a BIG difference!

I was contacted a couple of weeks ago by a client. I had put together a great system for him “many moons” ago, but, he was moving into a new home and wondered what he should get for a new TV. He said that the gear I had sold him was still working great but he realized that technology had come a long way! We started with the TV. So, I ordered him a new 65″ Samsung Quantum Dot ultra high definition set. A day or two went by and he sent me a text message, with pictures, from the local Costco asking why the 65″ Samsung TV’s on display in the store were considerably less money than the one we ordered. I assured him that he would be able to see the difference that quality makes! The day arrived to mount the TV in his new dream home. He helped me uncrate the new TV and the first thing he said was “OMG,  look how thin it is, the sets at Costco were a LOT thicker!”. I installed the new set on the wall and connected it to his Wi-Fi network. I put on some 4K content for him from YouTube and his jaw dropped! He could not believe the quality of the image he was seeing! He called his wife, his father in law, and some of the furniture movers that were still on site to see the picture quality on his new TV! The project is still ongoing, but as I drove home from his house that afternoon I received a text message from him. “I F’n LOVE that TV!” It’s comments like that that keep me doing what I love to do!!

Differences in UHD (4K) Televisions

TV sets are getting better! But, exactly what makes them better? You’re in the market for a new flat panel TV and have decided that an Ultra High Definition (UHD, also known as 4K) set is the way to go, might as well get the best to protect against the inevitable obsolescence of technology. Do you know what to look for? After all, there are wide variety of price tags for what looks, at first glance, like pretty much the same size television. How come? The electronics industry LOVES catch phrases, and 4K is one of them! What it means is that a 4K set has horizontal resolution of approximately 4000 pixels, or colour dots on the screen, measured from right to left. (It’s actually 4096, but hey, who’s counting!). The now OLD system of High Definition only has 1920 lines. So, is this going to give you a dramatically better picture? Not necessarily. In order to actually see a difference you need to go big, like at least 60″ or more. Next, you need to have something that is capable of sending this TV the information it needs to actually show you this resolution.

Wall mounted 55″ Panasonic UHD TV

Streaming media companies like Facebook and YouTube were quick to jump on the new 4K wagon and cable television companies followed along quickly, offering set top boxes that can process 4K. There are still limitations to both of these delivery systems. For streaming media your internet connection has to be fast and robust enough to handle the huge increase in data that 4K requires. Set top boxes have the same issues. You can also buy a UHD Blu-ray player, this will give you the best quality, but all in all, these delivery services suffer from a current lack of content! It’s still early in the game folks, and 4K will soon become the defacto standard for television. So why do I buy a 4K set if I can’t see the difference on a 50″ screen size and there isn’t a whole lot to watch? Here’s the really cool thing about UHD TV – it has the ability to show you more colour and a greater contrast level (the difference between black and white also known as High Dynamic Range or HDR). Here’s where the different prices come into effect for the same size TV. In order to show you more colour and greater contrast on the screen more advanced technology is needed, both in the actual display itself and also in the on board processing power of the computer inside the set. The entry level price tag will give you 4K resolution but using the old LCD technology of yesteryear. As you go up in price there are differences in the way that the dots are illuminated and in actually how the dots are illuminated… I could write a couple of books on this subject! These more expensive sets are going to be able to show you the colour and contrast improvement, where the lower priced TV can’t. In my, and the rest of the expert’s in the industry’s opinion, HDR and wider colour gamut are the MAIN reasons to embrace the new UHD TV sets. Contact us today. We’ll make sure your new TV is ready for the future of television!

Let the buyer beware!

Time for a new TV set? Be an informed consumer, as things are not always what they seem. For example; Sharp televisions, considered at one time to be the leader in large format (70, 80 and 90″) sets as little as 2 years ago, made a corporate decision to exit the North American market in 2015. Hitachi and Panasonic had already realized that they could not be competitive in the Americas, and they simply stopped sending TV’s here. In the case of Sharp, they licenced their brand name to the Chinese company Hisense, who are attempting to gain a foothold in the North American marketplace.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2015/08/sharp-exits-the-u-s-tv-business-what-you-need-to-knwo/index.htm

Now, Hisense makes a decent TV, but it is NOT a Sharp TV from days gone by! This is not a new concept in the electronic business, many past stalwarts of the television industry have gone the way of Sharp. RCA, GE, Electrohome, are simply licensed brand names, manufactured by another company. So, in a nutshell, before making a sizeable investment in a new television for your family room, know what you are buying!

OK kids – There is a difference in HDMI cables!

Your receiver box needs to talk to your new audio video surround sound receiver, which in turn needs to talk with your new 4K UHD television which needs to talk to your new Blu-Ray player! Like the late comedienne Joan Rivers used to say, “Can We Talk”?

This required conversation has to with Hollywood and the television industry not wanting the consumer to make perfect copies of their precious content. HDCP (High Definition Copy Protection) is what the industry came up with to try to prevent consumers from making copies of movies and television content in the new digital age. Ever since the beginning of home video recording devices the commercial governing bodies of the media production houses have tried to stop the copying of their content, even if the consumer has bought the content for their own use. In the early days of recording, VHS and Beta video tape recording devices used a system called Copy Guard, which was ridiculous in the sense that because it was analog video the resultant copy, if successful, looked like crap anyway – why try to protect it? But, we are now in the digital age, and making absolute identical copies is extremely easy – enter HDCP. This system requires 2 way communication between the source device and the end use device (usually a DVD or Blu-Ray player and a TV) and, any devices inserted between these 2 devices. If any one of the devices fails the test, no picture and no sound! The conversation is carried between the devices through the HDMI cables, which brings me to my point. As technology and digital  processing has increased exponentially the amount of information that needs to be transmitted through HDMI cables has increased exponentially, requiring different certifications for the HDMI cable all along the way. HDMI 1.0, Then HDMI 1.2, HDMI 1.4, HDMI 1.4a, HDMI 2.0. These new cables need to support the new Ultra High Definition picture, new High Dynamic Range, increased colour gamut and a bunch of additional audio information to support the new Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. It is because of the recording industries paranoia that we use HDMI cables in the first place when we have a perfect digital cables available in the form of fiber optics and the new display port interface, but these cables won’t support copy protection!

4K 60Hz certified HDMI cable

You see, HDMI allows the manufacturing industry (endorsed by Hollywood etc.) to encrypt the transmission of the signal. In order to make sure that the information is reasonably accurate after all of this encryption, two identical signals are sent and received with one the inverse of the other. If there is a difference between the two signals the on board error correction sets in. Any time you use digital error correction there is a chance that the algorithm will get something wrong, affecting the picture and/or sound quality of the content and if the communication can’t be made because of an HDMI cable that doesn’t meet the current standards of communication the whole chain shuts down leaving you with no picture, no sound, or both. So when it’s time to make the move to 4K make sure that your HDMI cables are ready to talk!
