Time to update your connections

There all a lot of flat panel TV’s out there, chances are you already have one. Is it showing you the best quality picture that it can? You may be connected with cabling that is holding back the picture and or sound quality. Look at the connection panel on the back of your TV. If you have HDMI ports (High Definition Multimedia Port) on the TV, but there is no cable plugged into them, your picture quality can be improved immensely! The television service providers (Bell, Rogers, Shaw etc.) all have the ability for their boxes to be connected with HDMI cables. By using HDMI the signal from your source device is transmitted to the television digitally, as opposed to analog, thus it is free from interference from radio and electromagnetic interference that can degrade the picture quality. This digital signal can be transmitted at a higher resolution than an analog signal and the result is a significant improvement in picture AND sound quality.Raven HDMI cable

This isn’t the end of the digital television evolution however! You may have heard that some of the content on TV is being recorded (and broadcasted) in 4K, also known as Ultra High Definition. UHD television WILL be coming to your television in the near future. Rogers has announced that UHD, currently available only in select major distribution areas, will be coming to all regions by the end of 2016. Other service providers have not announced a delivery time line, but the competition will force them to integrate UHD broadcasting. UHD will require a new set top box and a television capable of showing you the increased picture quality. UHD televisions are available now and it will also require an HDMI cable capable of carrying this better picture.

The HDMI cables that we use at Wired 1 are specified to meet or exceed the UHD specification and will work perfectly with your existing HD television and you will be ready for the new Ultra High Definition migration when it’s available in your area.

UHD is coming to your living room, are you ready?

Old Sony Flat CRTThose of us with a few years under our belts have seen quite a remarkable change in television. From 1926 until the early 1990’s televisions were heavy, clunky old cathode ray tubes, with the only real innovations being the transformation from black and white to colour pictures on the sets. The reason for the 70 year stagnation in technology? ANALOG. In the late 2000’s the change to digital television broadcasting was implemented and the genie was out of the bottle! Digital transmission allowed 100’s if not a 1,000 times more information to be sent through cables and over the airwaves. Television now would only be held back by fleeting limits of manufacturing technology. First came very basic digital images with only 480 lines of horizontal resolution, then very rapidly 720 lines, then 1080 lines, and hang on, here comes 2160 lines into your living room! In Japan they are testing television systems on the magnitude of four times this resolution!!

The CES (Consumer Electronics Show) on January 6th in Las Vegas will showcase the first fully compatible Ultra High Definition (UHD) television sets to hit the North American market. Sets available up this point did not encompass ALL of the requirements for UHD, they all would show the stated resolution but most could not meet the FULL requirements of the UHD standard that was only finalized in October 2015. These new sets will. Along with these new TVs there will be new UHD Bluray disc players from most of the major manufacturers. Netflix and YouTube are already streaming UHD content via the internet.Samsung UHD 4K

Wired 1 Consulting is ready for this next wave of technology and we will make sure you are too!

Amplifiers for today from NAD

When I first started working in the home electronics business one of the most amazing products that I sold was made by a company called NAD, NAD stands for New Acoustic Dimension. The company came about from the research of a group of audio professionals who were disgruntled with both the lousy sound quality of most of the offerings from the Japanese manufacturers and the ridiculously high price (but great sound quality) of the current “audiophile” makers. They enlisted the expertise of a noted designer, Bjorn Erik Edvardsen. NAD 3020The amplifier he designed, the NAD 3020, went on to be the best selling and highly reviewed audio component in audio history!

Fast forward to today… NAD continues the tradition and pedigree of the 3020 with the D3020. Like it’s ancestor, the D3020 is a very simplistic design but delivers exceptional performance and incorporated digital inputs and Bluetooth connectivity, it even has a subwoofer output should you want to beef up the bottom end!

If you are searching for an amplifier to th[4]get you into the digital age and don’t have a lot of space to spare, but, you still want an amplifier that sounds like MUSIC the NAD D3020 just might be right for you.

Use a quality control

If you have gone to the expense of having distributed audio in your home the volume controls may be letting you down. Most volume controls are very poorly designed and are seldom capable of handling the power from a larger distributed audio amplifier without causing insertion loss and added distortion. If you have (or want to have) a really rocking sound in your remote rooms check out these bad boys from SpeakerCraft.

Able to handle the output of amplifiers with up to 120 watts per channel without distortion and with a quality look and feel, it’s an easy upgrade to your system.

The picture shows the capacitor network on the back of the control with one already inserted in the wall.

Hope for quality audio video.

On a recent trip to London, UK (my first trip to England) I tried to find a digital fibre optic switcher for my stepdad. The local equivalent to Radioshack, Maplins, had a mechanical switcher that we purchased and found it would not work, twice! I thought the first one was merely  defective, so went back and exchanged with the same result.
I knew that London had a fairly healthy audiophile community from reading trade magazines over the years and my telephone search took me to Grahams HiFi. They knew exactly what I was looking for and said they could have a powered, remote operated switch for me in a couple of days. We got a call the next day to tell me it had arrived.
A short cab ride later and a search down a hidden alley, we arrived at Grahams. I had no doubt that this switch would work as I noticed the CEDIA (Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association) on the front door.
As we entered the showroom we were greeted by an array of Bowers and Wilkins speakers and Naim electronics!

Even a Linn Sondek LP12, one of my favourite turntables, yup, a vinyl record turntable!
There was also a multi monitor work station where an employee was designing an automated control system for a design build!
Just like New Brunswick, sometimes the best is harder to find, but well worth the search!
When you are ready for a system that performs above and beyond what you can get from the highly visible, mass market retailers, Wired 1 Consulting is here for you.

How to make your smart TV even smarter!

If you have, or you are about to have, a new “Smart” TV in your home, chances are pretty good that you are going to want to take advantage of the streaming internet services that are integrated into the set. Services like Netflix, YouTube, etc. Almost all “Smart” TV’s have the ability to connect to your existing Wi-Fi (wireless internet) in your home.

Wi-Fi is a convenient way to check your email or send a text message from your tablet or phone, it, unfortunately, is not good for great picture and sound quality on a TV. When the picture is small, image quality can be severely compromised and you will still see a pretty good image, but blow that same picture up to 40, 50, 60+ inches and the same image looks pretty bad, in some cases, unwatchable! All “Smart” TV’s have the ability to have a direct, wired connection to the internet and if you are fortunate enough to have your internet router box in the same location as your TV then it’s easy to simply connect a cable to the back of the TV. For the vast majority of our clients this is not the case. The router is in another room, or even on another floor of the home, so, you are forced to connect to the Wi-Fi network because you would have to drill through floors, or run unsightly wires across the room… – WRONG!

A solution exists called Powerline that uses your home’s electrical system to connect at one end with a wire to your router. The other end is plugged into a wall power outlet at the TV. This end can have either a single or a multiple output connector port that allows you to use a wire to connect directly to your “Smart” TV and, or, other devices that may require a better connection to the internet, such as a gaming console like PlayStation or Xbox. The results are dramatic! Because the Powerline system is designed to give you the same speed and quality as a direct connection to your router there are no more grainy pictures and “spinning balls” on your TV set! Now you have a great way to extend your network simply by adding another module in another location where you want better speed access to the internet, maybe that bedroom TV or the kid’s playroom.

It makes a GREAT gift that will keep on giving!

Why updates are important!

You have a new audio video system. You paid a lot of money for it! Updating your electronics is as important as changing the oil in your car. I don’t mean buying new devices, I mean keeping the devices that you have up to date.
Today’s televisions and peripheral source devices all contain some type of computer saystem and just like your home computer they need to be periodically updated, usually over the internet. These updates do many things for you. In some cases it’s simply the addition of new features and functions to your device but in a lot of cases these updates are critical to your device continuing to work!Samsung Denon
I had a client call me up the other day and told me that his TV was losing its picture. It would just turn black. He owns a beautiful, top of the line surround sound system with a gorgeous 70″ screen. I went to his home and checked all the connections. Everything was connected correctly, but the TV picture was still cutting out. I then checked the individual units for software and firmware updates. I discovered that one of his devices was not connecting to his network due to a defective network cable and so it was unable to get updates. A new cable was installed and viola, there was an update available. Downloaded the update, the problem was solved and the client even mentioned that the picture on his TV looked better! Usually cable and satellite boxes are kept up to date by the service provider automatically, you never even know that it has been updated, but on a lot of electronics you have to actually “hunt” for the update. You can usually find the update check in the settings area of the on screen menu of the device, you may have to RTFM (read the fine manual), or you can give Wired 1 a call and we do it for you and show you how.
